THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN

Adscam sweeps to historic majority
Well, 43 per cent is a majority in Canada. Yes, the polls have only just closed here in the East, and already the ac Decision Desk has projected a winner. For you folks in the West, tough beans. The results have been carefully tabulated by the firm of Arthur Andersen, and Adscam is indeed the winner of our Name That Scandal contest, as chosen by you. Gens du Payola was funnier, Money for Nothing was more direct, but brevity and ease of use put Adscam over the top. Plus it continues in the fine old Canadian tradition of plundering American political culture for names. (Older readers will remember the Abscam sting operation of the early 1980s. And where do you think we got the name Medicare from, anyway?) However, in recognition of Money for Nothing's brave fight, and to keep its supporters from spending the next 10 years stabbing me in the back, I propose occasionally to combine the two on first reference, as in the "Adscam 'money for nothing' scandal," much as Iran-Contra is sometimes referred to as the "Iran-Contra, arms-for-hostages affair." But for the most part it will be simply Adscam. As in "further charges were laid today in the mushrooming Adscam scandal," or "in what came to be known as the Adscam affair." Fly, little meme, fly... UPDATE: FIRST RECORDED ADSCAM USAGE OFFSITE Paul Wells: "It's official. The biggest obstacle to the proper functioning of Mr. Justice John Gomery's inquiry into the Adscam scandal is Paul Martin." Strangely enough, it was posted at 8:29 this morning, three and a half hours before the polls closed. I guess that's how they do politics down there. SECOND: Frozen in Montreal: "... in what has now been christened Adscam..." THIRD: Mader Blog: "Adscam ... I like it." FOURTH (NEARLY): Canadian Press: "...the ad agency scam which is now dragging down Liberal popularity." FIFTH: Politicswatch: Feb 17: "OTTAWA - The Opposition continued to push the government on its knowledge of the $100 million sponsorship scandal, now being dubbed Adscam..." SIXTH: Peace, Order and Good Government, Eh: "The only thing I've seen in the media today that actually moves the Adscam story along was..." SEVENTH: The London Fog: "[Modesty forbids] has been blogging extensively on Adscam ..." EIGHTH: Being American in T.O.: "...Ad-scan..." (Well, close.) BONUS POINT: Googling "Adscam" turns up a link with some sort of Internet perversion, plus this Tennessee swingers club. Which, under the circumstances, seems strangely appropriate.
