One year less a day

The Globe predicts an election for June 27, on the assumption the government will fall May 19, the first day the opposition gets a chance to pass a motion of non-confidence.

It might have been sooner, but the government has pushed back all "opposition days," when the opposition is allowed to put forward motions of its choosing, until late May or even June -- only with some last-minute procedural hardball yesterday were the Tories able to extract the May 19 date out of them.

And yes, it does appear that the Liberals have put off passing the budget implementation bill until then, notwithstanding earlier denials. Wonderful: a government that is too afraid to put any bills before the House, for fear they might come to a vote. They've more or less barricaded themselves in their offices. MORE: Chantal Hebert says the Liberals have committed political suicide.
