PM for STV in BC

The Yes campaign in B.C.'s referendum on electoral reform gets a boost:

PRESTON MANNING URGES A YES VOTE Preston Manning has strongly endorsed that British Columbia adopt the Single Transferable Vote (STV) voting system. "The B.C. Citizen's Assembly on Electoral Reform was a bold and innovative experiment in grass roots, deliberative democracy," he says. "And I believe that its chief recommendation -- that B.C. adopt the STV system -- should be strongly supported." In particular, Manning warned that should the referendum fail, politicians will not again consult the people on significant public policy issues for decades to come. He fears a defeat of the referendum will be interpreted by the politicians that they need not consult with people and that they know what is best. Manning is a long time proponent of greater democratic participation for ordinary Canadians in the running of their country. He is also an early proponent of less party discipline. STV is said to make MLAs more responsive to their voters than to their parties.

Go for it B.C.!
