Bland pragmatism in Ontario, with a bit of tough-on-crime and tax cuts for the 905-ers. Check. And throw-them-out populism in the West. Check. Truly, this is a brand new day. Not at all like every Conservative campaign of the last fifty years.
Defence was on the mind of deputy Tory leader Peter MacKay as he announced increased defence spending in Atlantic Canada, the latest in a stream of military statements coming from the party throughout the campaign.
MacKay said a Conservative government would purchase three new ships, upgrade submarines, increase naval personnel in Nova Scotia by 1,000 and add more than 1,000 army personnel in the region.
