Winnipeg. 1978 by the looks of it.

Awesomest video in the history of awesomeness. My town, in its glory days, captured by an auteur of the first rank. I wept. PLUS: Bring Back the Jets!

Why are people from Winnipeg the only people who like Winnipeg?

Does everyone remember the Simpson's episode that featured Winnipeg? The gag featured a sign for those entering the town:

"We are born here, what's your excuse?"

Whenever I hear "Winnipeg" all I can think of is this.
Amazing amount of footage, though.

Hey! That's my hometown you're talking about. Show a little respect. People who tear down other people's hometowns are only one step above that lowest form of animal life, people who tear down their own hometowns.

Off-topic but there's no open thread:

Latest SES numbers:
CPC 36%, Libs 33% (difference within Margin of Error)

Cue the Tory supporters:
"It's just a blip, Harper is still in majority territory"
"Dion is still in free fall!"
"I don't trust SES" (even though they were off by 0.1% for every party last election)
"But the Tories are up 3% in Quebec surely that's enough for a majority!"
"36% for the CPC that's awesome, it's up from the last SES poll done almost two months ago!"
and so on.

Hey, I don't say it, I just link to it. "Homer", on the other hand...

On bringing back the Jets....

Without government support? Other than maybe an arena, which lasts long past an NHL team.

It would make sense for the Apers to own it. SPorts teams make money if you own the arena, the team, the concessions and the boradcast channel.

Then across the chain you can make money. The team may lose but the arena makes the dollars along with merchandising and broadast.

I would love to see the Jets back in Winnipeg...beats Kansas City as far as I am concerned, but I would prefer to see a team moved there.

Expansion drives up salaries and dilutes quality....The NHL doesnt need a new team for a few more years. Better to move Columbus or Nashville or Atlanta to Winnipeg, assuming they can afford it.

Good rivalry with Minnesota, Chicago and Calgary and Edmonton....short flights to all.

If the NHL had to change cities...Winnipeg and Vegas would be my suggestions

Mark,

One of the main Simpsons writers is from Winnipeg....so there was also the reference when a car was going by with kids fighting in the back and the dad said,

"Dont make me turn this car around and go back to Winnipeg!!"

Given that if it's 3:00 pm in New York it is 1978 in Manitoba, are we certain that this is archive footage? :-)

Seriously, although I cannot remember the seventies (or Canada for that matter) that clip rocks.

So what's your point Coyne. Using so-called 'journo from major media' influence to direct Canadians to this kinda junk ?? Kinsella put ya up to it ??

Winnipeg is a hell of a lot more than punks, pot, booze, clowns, vandalism, a child's bleeding head, .. Get a life.

I happened to be in Winnipeg in the spring of 95 (96?) when they announced the Jets were leaving town. It was the most incredible outpuring of civic grief I've ever seen. I was so moved, just watching it on TV in my hotel, that I phoned up and donated 20 bucks to the fund to keep the Jets in the Peg. However it all came to naught as we know.

But Winnipeg was/is a great city. I spent a couple years there as a kid - Deer Park Junior High.

And did you know that "The Phantom of the Paradise" was a bigger hit in Winnipeg than anywhere else? If you haven't seen TPOTP, rent it or buy it.

You.will.not.be.dissappointed.

Thise last two comments are accurate.

TPOTP coment is interesting as I loved the movie "tastey Winslow Tastey"

But being in the GTA nobody knew it. I get to grad school and myroommate is a Winnipeg boy and yes he had the Soundtrack on CD!!!! Couldnt believe it.

Great movie, hit in Winnipeg....who knew.

For years Winnipeg was used a test market for products as well. The demographics of the day were close to Winnipeg and its isolation meant you could launch a product there on media and not influence or be influenced by other media.....maybe that explains Mr Coynes "own drummerness".

Remeber Winnipeg was the home of K-Tel!! Major major influence on marketing....any influence their on Andrew? (it even makes Julian fries)

Something about more music bars per pop than anywhere else in Canada (Austin Texas makes that claim for the world now!) Nutured numerous bands, Guess WHo, Neil Young, Lenny Breaux I believe, Crash Test Dummies I am sure there are others.

How long were you there AC?

There are two things that Alberta does not have that Winnipeg does...

Lakes nearby that you actually want to swim in during the summer.

Rye bread that tastes like rye bread.

Winnipeg fans tried their hearts out to keep the team but the owners realized a bigger payday by the team going to the USA.

Born there, grew up there (at the same time as the hosers in the video), moved back there not long ago. It's got a soul, which is more than a lot of other places can say. "Awesome" isn't the word that usually comes to mind. "Good" will do.

Born there, grew up there, moved away in 1994. Every time I go back I pick up a couple loaves of "City" rye bread (much better than "Kub" - which still beats just about any other rye bread I have had across Canada).

Have yet to rule out a move home.

Love the music in that video! Can anyone name any of the songs? First one sounds like Zeppelin. Gotta download some of that. 70s rock is not my forte....

hmmm a month in Winnipeg working at U of M.

Remember the Red Room, the Norlander & the Voyageur . . .

A fine town after I learned a "social" was NOT a bunch of old ladies having tea.

Those jetsowner.com guys are a bunch of losers. Ignore them. They give the city a bad rep. Winnipeg now is better than it was in the 70s everywhere but downtown.

BTW, I remember Phantom being really big here and I was shocked to find out that it was not a major hit movie elsewhere. Odd.

Love that choppy old 8mm film. Kind of like the Kennedy assassination, only happier.

My dad used to drive a green International truck just like the one in the video. He sold it mid-70s. Who knows? Maybe the guys in the video were the ones who bought it from him.
