Schreiber time, take two
- the chairman, Paul Szabo, beginning the proceedings, then stopping -- "I almost forgot" -- to swear the witness in....
- Schreiber acted as the middleman between Airbus/MBB/Thyssen and Government Consultants International, collecting and distributing millions of dollars in secret commissions, "to organize the things and to watch the funds flow because we had somebody who stole the money." Wha??
- Schreiber donated $10,000 to the Liberal party shortly before the 1993 election, but hasn't "the smallest clue" why.
- John Crosbie, the former Conservative Transport minister, conducted an inquiry into the Airbus contract when concerns first surfaced in the late 1980s. Schreiber says he did not interview him. (Mind you, Crosbie says the RCMP never interviewed him. Curiouser and curiouser.)
- Asked why he paid Mulroney in cash, Schreiber replied: "because it was available." Shades of Willie Sutton!
- Schreiber was once a judge. For nine years. Or so he maintained, twice, before the committee. When? Where? How much did he pay for it?

Andrew:
Thats 2 summaries now where you've failed to mention the critical part of Schreiber's testimony.
As long as you keep avoiding it, I'll keep posting it:
If there was anything of significance from his testimony, Schreiber put to rest the decade long media and Liberal conspiracy that Mulroney had received secret commissions from Airbus.
Funny that didn't appear in your executive summary, the Globe and Mail, the Fifth Estate or Don Newman's "news" show.
Lets put this together:
1. Mulroney successfuly sued the government for 2.1million because the government accused him of illegal activities related to Airbus.
2. The parliamentary committee now investigating whether that settlement should be repaid has just learned from the only man who could possibly connect the dots to support the governments allegation. Schreiber has told that committee in no uncertain terms that there is NO connection to Airbus.
3. Consequently, the Mulroney libel settlement stands.
4. The only person in the universe with more incentive than the CBC, Stevie Cameron, Allan Rock and the Globe and Mail to link Brian Mulroney to Airbus is Karlheinz Schreiber. Notwithstanding his dubious character, even Schreiber couldn't make the link.
5. Unless a new bombshell is forthcoming, this is inquisition is about the private dealings of a private citizen.
5. Unfortunately for you and Don Newman, you need a new name for the scandal. May I suggest you call it "The very public investigation into the private life of Brian Mulroney"
I'm starting to like this Karlheinz Schreiber more and more all the time. I like his baggy jeans that fall down because the Ottawa cops have taken his belt away in case he commits suicide with it. I like his heavy leg irons and handcuffs that he keeps showing off to the assembled press hordes. I like the fact that it takes a handful of burly Ottawa cops to escort this frail 73 year old up to his Rocksomething mansion. I like it that Edward Greenspan is his lawyer, and in a few short words on a courthouse step can do more to demolish the Harper/Nicholson fiasco than the opposition has been able to do in a week. And finally I love his cheerful outlook on life, his mischievous grin, his wise old sense of humour, especially when asked by a Bloc MP if she could an envelope of money and he replied, "under the circumstances, I think yes." You can understand why he got along so well with Brian Mulroney, aside from the money of course.
John W:
After scanning your post and blog, its clear that you are just another mindless ontario liberal mouthpiece - the kind that would rather avoid elections altogether if there was a way for you to tick "liberal" off on your tax return.
These must be sad days for you.
A recent television interview with Jean Chretien mentioned that libel suit settlement with Mulroney. Chretien doubted the justice department would have recommended that settlement in light of the recent headlines.
The government would have recognized Mulroney's bluff on the libel suit; the $300K weakens his credibility. Whether there was a connection to Airbus or not, who knows what skeletons come rattling out of the closet. Like he was libeled for a bank robbery he never committed because he was across town holding up a convenience store at the time.
Brian:
Is that how you characterize anyone who doesn't accept your take on events? That must make life easy for you.
Herb:
Did it hurt your feelings because you've voted liberal all your life? Election after election, scandal after scandal - you've managed to find some loophole that justifies your voting for the Liberal Party. If so, I don't apologize.
Thats how I characterize someone who admires the work of Karlheinz Schreiber. Liberals are prepared for our institutions to be made a mockery of so long as it helps them in the polls.
One month ago, Stephane Dion was adamant that Canadians didn't want an election. Today somehow, Canadians are growing warmer for one. I think Dion is confusing Canadians with Liberals.
He's a shameless opportunist - so bring on that election. I can't wait to see him in the debates:
Rick Mercer put it best, when referring to a picture of Dion with his hands in the "prayer" position he said: "Stephane Dion tried to perform "This is the Church and this is the Steeple" but everyone thinks he said blurch and feeple."
