I am glad to see that Latimer's finally being released. It's about time.

On a different topic: does this short entry here mean that you will finally blog here again (I just removed your blog from my blogroll the other day because it had been a "blog corpse" for too long)?

There was this big deal about him getting a 10 year minimum. He's out after 7. I guess 10 is 7 in Canadian justice legalese. 7 years for killing your daughter with supposed lofty motives. Sounds about right to me.

The problem with our criminal justice system isn't the odd supposed tougher sentence like this one.
(And really how tough is 7 years?)

The problem is the ridiculously low sentences that are meted out for the most part.

Let's see now, I'm sure someone will be nominating him for the Order of Canada for killing his young daughter. Someone doing 7 years in jail for that high moral act surely deserves no less?

In the Roman times, under Roman law, fathers had the legal right to put his off-spring to death.

Maybe we should amend our laws to reflect the Roman consensus so that poor Mr. Latimer can go about the business of raising or snuffing out his family as he sees fit without this appalling interference by justice officials.
(In a 2006 interview with the Canadian Press the reporter said that " He still refers to the prosecutors as predators, criminals and sadists.")

Suuuuuuuuuuuure. That's what this is about. I'm sure that if we closely examine the case we will see that Mr. Latimer is some evil, backward, insane boogey man who maniaclly wants to murder his whole family.

Either that or he was a father and a farmer who spent 12 years trying to raise a severely handicapped daughter, watching her suffer daily and being unable to do much about it.

I know a lot of people feel it prudent to judge Mr. Latimer based on their sense of ethics and their high-and-mighty sense that they can possibly understand what this man and his family were going through.

He knew how to communicate with his daughter, not us. He was forced to sacrifice a normal life for 12 years, not us. He made a decision that I would never wish to be in a position to make, not us.

The man did what he felt was right under very difficult circumstances and has now paid a penalty, beyond which I personally think was necessary. Let the man be.

He served his time and deserved every bit of it.

Now, he's met the requirements for release with conditions. I hope he meets those conditions.

The prosecutors were not in the wrong here. Robert Latimer was.

Gwalgen said "The man did what he felt was right under very difficult circumstances and has now paid a penalty, beyond which I personally think was necessary. Let the man be."

Now that he is released Mr. Latimer should make every effort to re-integrate with his family and look after their interests. Hopefully he'll let us be and not go on a crusade to encourage people to play God with other people's lives like he did. By doing that he's simply compounding the tradgedy and his own family's suffering. Haven't they suffered enough? Anything else is selfishness on his part. This is a case of father not knowing best.

Just to clear, leaving your son or daughter to die from exposure as a young baby was common practice in the Roman and Greek world.

The Christian sect made themselves conspicuous by loudly banging the gong against it.

Make of that what you will.

Make of it what I will, eh?

So if I think Latimer should be in jail, I should keep it hush-hush, lest I end up getting fed to the lions?

And if I think he should be free, St. Peter will escort me to the down escalator when I die?

Eep. Time to take the traditional Liberal path, and plant myself firmly on the nearest fence.

on ur CBC sunday "At Issue" comment on human rights in Tibet. Pls do some research and don't comment like those from old boys club. The other gentleman from Harris/.. Institute is more intelligent and observant.
Tibet issue is not a human rights issue, it is a SOVEREIGNTY issue , similiar to Quebec independence to Canada.
